Does the food recall have anything to do with my dog's recent diagnosis of SARDS?

question:

Hi there,

I was wondering if you could help me with a question that is bothering me- recently my dog Pupper was diagnosed with SARDS by a local animal opthamologist here in the Tampa Bay area. Back in January of this year I had put Pupper on one of the cuts 'n gravy style foods produced by Nutro which is unfortunately one of the recalled pet foods by Menu foods- is it possible that his recent diagnosis of SARDS could be attibuted to contaminated food?

Thanks,
J, Wolff

answer:

I assume you are referring to Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration (SARD).  The cause is unknown.  The pet food contamination seems to be a nephrotoxin which means it causes kidney failure, which is unrelated to SARDs.  You may want to double check with your ophthalmologist, however, I cannot imagine a connection.
